Preparing for Parenthood

An online, on demand workshop to support you and your partner in preparing for your life after birth.

Preparing for Parenthood is the groundwork I wish every new parent had before their baby arrived.

Most people’s post natal preparation stops at getting stuff in for the baby, maybe learning to put a nappy on a doll. Expectant parents, and wider society, give far less attention to preparing for the enormous transition which occurs post natally: in yourself, your relationship and your whole life. This is your chance to do it differently.

Why Prepare for Parenthood?

This is for you if you’re preparing to welcome your baby Earthside, and you’re starting to imagine what life will be like when they arrive.

You’re excited to meet them of course… but also feeling quietly anxious. You don’t really know what to expect.

Maybe none of your friends or family have given birth recently, or you’ve just not spent much time around babies. You haven’t seen what life with a new baby is really like.

Maybe you have, and those people have shared their horror stories about babies who are up all night and you’re starting to worry… Is that really true? How would I even manage that?

We’ll de-mystify the early days with your baby, with an honest discussion about what you can expect from them and why. But more than that, we’ll explore the transition into parenthood for you and help you think about what you might need so that you feel more prepared for what lies ahead.

Doing this work in your pregnancy is essential preparation because babies are excellent attention-grabbers, and you won’t have the headspace for problem solving when you’re sleep-deprived, recovering from birth and getting to know a new human – as well as a new version of yourself.

You won’t get a list of rules about how to parent here.

But you will understand your baby more deeply, anticipate the challenges that commonly catch new parents off guard, and make a practical plan for looking after yourselves and each other so that you head in to the next phase with more confidence, more connection and less overwhelm.

““We regularly prepare for the baby, but it was a good reminder that we also need to prepare for our own wellbeing and for how we’ll look after each other”.

– Louise, previous participant

Why Prepare for Parenthood with me?

Over the past 7 years, I’ve worked alongside hundreds of expectant and new parents. I’ve seen and heard the same things come up time and time again… I know the common challenges you’ll come up against when you become a new parent.

So often, people share with me that they feel overwhelmed, confused, like they’re getting it all wrong.

They’re not – it’s just that no one prepared them for what was coming!

I’m a (twice!) trained Breastfeeding Peer Supporter and have tons of experience supporting parents in the earliest days to understand what is developmentally normal for babies. I’ve heard every myth about baby sleep and feeding under the sun and heard so many people say “Why did nobody tell me!” … but that doesn’t have to be you.

I’ve developed this workshop from the thousands of conversations I’ve had with my clients over the years about what surprised them – and the things that made this time feel more manageable.

It’s pulled from a preparation session I hold with my doula families – the conversations we ARE having in advance so that they feel supremely confident and ready for anything that lies ahead.

Preparing for Parenthood is all my experience and knowledge brought together.

My goal in all of my work is to help you find your own way – there is no one perfect way to do this. I’m here to help you understand what’s happening, think through what matters to you, and make decisions that work for your family.

This is about opening up the conversations that no one else has had with you yet.
Conversations like:

how your relationship is going to hold up when your partner is enjoying a leisurely 20 minute shower and you’ve not had a solo wee all week.

who you’re really going to be able to call on for support – and what you even want from them – when you don’t even recognise yourself anymore.

how you’re going to get any rest when you feel like your eyeballs are melting out of your head but are weirdly simultaneously completely wired.

This is the preparation most people don’t realise they need until they’re already living it.

” It’s so easy to be overwhelmed by the information out there! This workshop is clear, concise and has a more ‘natural’, empathetic focus on what the newborn is going through. The best thing to watch with your partner and start up other conversations and research’.’

Frequently Asked Questions

Most antenatal education courses cover some practicalities of baby care- How to put on a nappy, umbilical cord care, maybe some First Aid.

Preparing for parenthood is something else altogether – it’s honest, reassuring guidance on what to really expect from life with a newborn, beyond the basics (because let’s be honest, nappy changes aren’t that tricky after you’ve done the first one!)

And even more importantly, it’s about what you will need as a new parent and how you can prepare for the common challenges before you’re in a sleep-deprived haze. My planners are going to make everything you learn come to life and be directly applicable to YOUR unique family set up.

Absolutely. You might know what to expect of a newborn baby this time round (or maybe you need a refresher on that too!) and you’ll know from your first baby what a life-altering time this is.

Preparing for Parenthood will give you a chance to reflect on what went well first time round and what additional support you might need to put in place this time. It’s never too late to prioritise yourself or to make some changes – this workshop will help you feel ready for the next phase of your family life.

A one off payment of £49 gives you lifetime access (Note: the lifetime of the course. As long as it’s on the portal, you have access) There’s no timescale in which you need to complete the videos or activities – it’s entirely self paced.

Doing this work in your pregnancy is essential preparation because your brain is going to be completely different when your baby is here! Babies are excellent attention-grabbers, and you won’t have the headspace for problem solving when you’re sleep-deprived, recovering from birth and getting to know a new human – as well as a new version of yourself.

My mission for you to have an empowering birth is all about setting you up for success as a new parent – and this is another thing you can do NOW to set yourself up to thrive as a new parent.

“My biggest takeaway from the session was a reminder not to strive for perfection in everything. I can imagine myself giving others advice about not worrying too much about doing things perfectly, whether that’s getting the right amount of sleep, finding the “perfect” breastfeeding routine, or feeling like I’m doing everything right..

However, hearing someone explain these things in detail, particularly the idea of the fourth trimester, really reinforced the importance of taking things slowly and not putting unnecessary pressure on myself about things I’m worried about in the future.

Overall, the session was a reminder about self-reflection, self-care and being kinder to myself. As this is our first baby, I think it’s natural to want to do everything “right”, but it was reassuring to learn that there are lots of different versions of what “right” looks like. Ultimately, it’s about finding what works for our baby and for us, rather than trying to live up to what we’ve read or what we think we’re supposed to do.

I also really appreciated the additional resources and links to local support, it’s really valuable to have recommendations in a time where finding new people to help is a bit exhausting”.
